Kindergarten
Kindergartners will learn the importance of being great listeners. Students will receive a visit from I Care Cat, who will help them learn basic skills for listening. They will also learn more about feelings. Our "I Care Rule" is "We care about each other's feelings." Students will look for clues about how a person feels by observing face and body language. "Tattling Madeline," will visit to teach us about when it is important to report if something is wrong. Students will learn from Second Step Curriculum about keeping themselves safe by using the seven never, never rules. Students will learn and practice the Three Rs — recognize, refuse, report — to help themselves with dangerous situations. Finally, the kindergartners will continue learning the I Care rules, including "We are responsible for what we say and do." We will discuss being responsible by using manners, getting along with others, making good choices and taking care of ourselves. Students will practice their responsibility skills by growing a special plant.
First Grade
The first graders will learn what makes a great listener. Listening plays a key role in first grade, and we will focus on the skill all year. We also discuss skills to make and keep friends, and learn the behaviors that cause friends to get angry and what to do when this happens. We will make some delicious friendship cookies to share and learn about the Golden Rule. Students will learn about personal safety with Second Step Curriculum. We will talk about feelings and the importance of listening to how our bodies talk to us. Students will learn about work people do, and how jobs are grouped together. We will create our own town with different businesses that students create. During the year, we will talk about bullying and will role play what to do in different bullying situations.
Second Grade
The second graders receive a visit from Barney Bear and his furry forest friends to learn new skills to be an outstanding student. Barney and his crew will focus on listening carefully, following directions, checking work, asking questions, working carefully and using time wisely. We will also discuss bullying and what to do about it, using The Children's Hospital of Wisconsin bullying curriculum. We will share stories and role play what to do if a student is bullied. Students will take an inventory to learn about their different "smarts." They will use Careerlocker to learn more about interesting careers, and they will write a report to present to the class.
Third Grade
Third graders start the school year by working on various school-related skills. We will evaluate our own listening style and come up with a plan to become a better listener. Students will learn about different ways to solve conflicts and will design a poster about conflict resolution to share with younger students. We will learn how drugs affect growing bodies. We will also learn about the world of work. Students will create an avatar to help them in their career journey. Using the Careerlocker program, students will explore various careers. They will participate in career activities and answer questions about different jobs they are exploring.
Fourth Grade
Students will focus on the basics of being a good student. They will learn about listening, being organized and understanding what makes the best homework environment. We will also talk about setting goals. Students will learn what to do when they are angry and will learn how people handle their anger and how to control it. Students will use Second Step curriculum to learn about safe and unsafe touches and the rules for staying safe. Students will also learn about themselves — how to think and answer questions about their likes and dislikes, uniqueness and independence. They will wrap up this unit by analyzing this information to figure out how it relates to future jobs. Students will research a job they are interested in and report on it to the class.
Fifth Grade
In fifth grade, students learn about their unique learning style. We will talk about the importance of being a good listener and the skills it takes to become one. They will learn about four different drugs/substances: nicotine, alcohol, marijuana and inhalants — along with how the drug affects a person's health. Students will also learn about different kinds of abuse and what to do if it happens to them. Students will use CareerLocker to answer questions about skills, interests and abilities. They will be matched to jobs that use these characteristics. Students will research several jobs in their interest areas and then choose one and write a want ad that explains the job. Students will also plan and organize the end-of-year field day.
Sixth Grade
In sixth grade, we will discuss listening skills, note-taking and organization skills. Students will work on their note-taking skills while watching a video on hygiene. We'll follow up on this by making a poster about a health topic of the student's choice. Students will discuss topics concerning health including alcoholism, depression and puberty. They will work in Career Cruising and select classes for the next year. A guest speaker will visit to teach students about combinations, locks, locker rooms and junior high.
Seventh Grade
Seventh graders will start the year by focusing on the school-related skills, such as organization and listening skills. They will also learn what they can do if they miss school. A special visitor will come in to present school breakfast options. Students will use online curriculum from The Children's Hospital in Milwaukee called "It's UR Choice," to learn about chemical use in teens. The seventh-graders will also learn about career clusters and will take a career matchmaker assessment to learn about their own interests. The students will also have an opportunity to visit a career fair in May in Rhinelander.
